The Persistence Of Vision Raytracer ('POV-Ray') is a freely downloadable cross-
platform application that implements the raytracing algorithm, which is a technique for simulating the physical behavior of light utilizing software-based mathematical models. It can be used to generate photorealistic images that resemble objects in the real world, or to visualize "virtual" objects that do not physically exist. It has been used worldwide -- and even out of it -- both by hobbyists and artists, and by educators and professionals in numerous fields including biochemistry/protein research, medicine, architecture, engineering/product design, and mathematical visualization. Dimension Launches Global Design and 3D Printing Contest for High School and Secondary Students

National Design Engineering Show

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2004--
"Extreme Redesign: The 3D Printing Challenge," to award $18,000 in scholarships to individual and team winners

The Dimension 3D Printing Group, a business unit of Stratasys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SSYS), announced today the launch of "Extreme Redesign: The 3D Printing Challenge," a global design and 3D printing contest for high school and secondary students that will award $18,000 in scholarships to individual and team winners.

Whether it's a new perspective on an everyday product or a fresh vision for updating a famous piece of art, animation or architecture, Dimension is calling on computer-aided-design (CAD) students worldwide to send in their most creative, useful and innovative Extreme Redesigns.

To enter, students or teams send a .stl file of their Extreme Redesign to Dimension along with a completed submission form, including a 200-word description of the value and benefit of the Extreme Redesign part. Dimension will then send entrants a 3D print of their redesign they can hold in their hands and evaluate. From there, entrants have the opportunity to make any necessary design improvements and develop a second iteration for final submission.

"Extreme Redesign is meant to challenge, inspire and financially reward CAD students worldwide," said Jon Cobb, vice president and general manager of 3D printing for Stratasys. "For any student who has ever had a unique idea for extending the capabilities or enhancing the aesthetics of a part, product or piece of art, this contest provides a venue for him or her to share their idea with the world. We look forward to receiving a broad range of entries from tomorrow's engineers, artists and inventors."

Final submissions must be postmarked by Jan. 31, 2005. A panel of independent judges from various industries will judge final entries on the basis of creativity, usefulness, part integrity and aesthetics. A total of 12 individual and team winners will be selected in February 2005 and will receive $2,500 or $1,000 scholarships. Four first place winners will travel to an awards ceremony at the National Design Engineering Show in Chicago. Complete contest rules and submission information is available at www.dimensionprinting.com.

2005 Adobe Design Achievement Awards

San Jose, CA; November 24, 2004 -- Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced a call for entries in its Fifth Annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, which this year expands to ten countries and nine competition categories. The awards honor the most talented and promising student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, and computer artists from the world's top design, film, and broadcast institutions.

For the first time students from Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and Switzerland are invited to participate. They will join entrants from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom in submitting projects in nine categories including environmental graphics, digital illustration, digital photography/imaging, interactive design, print design, self-expression, and time-based media. Two newly inaugurated categories--animation and broadcast design--broaden the scope of this year's video submissions.

Using Adobe's design platforms, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Adobe Video Collection software, students submit projects and are judged by an independent panel of six judges, including such industry luminaries as Matthew Richmond from Chopping Block, Gail Anderson from Spot Design, Kathy Fredrickson from Studio Blue, Dean Velez from Gannett Production Services, Dava Guthmiller from Noise 13, and Frank Gladstone from Dreamworks SKG.

Judges will select winners based on overall impact, design execution and technical capabilities. Finalists will receive a trip to New York City to participate in the awards event, and an opportunity to showcase their work. Winners also will meet with leading industry professionals during studio tours and the ceremony. First place entries will receive US$5000 and a selection of Adobe products.

Students will be able to submit entries from March 14, 2005 to April 29, 2005. The entries will be judged in May, with the finalists contacted shortly thereafter. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on July 21, 2005, at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

"A Walrus Character Contest - iPod Shuffle, Attention Graphic Artists!"

So, I thought I'd hold my own little contest for graphic artists that want to show off their skills to create such a character for me. The prize for creating the character I end up using will be an iPod Shuffle (a $99 value that I will order from Apple and have delivered to the winner directly). I will also pay the winner (an amount to be negotiated later) to create various instances of the character posed in various ways for actual use on my site.
