Intel or AMD

Ok, I have a Pentium 4 currently, but I don't like my motherboard, so I'm planning on buying a new one next month when I get my new case(birthday next month <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /happy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'^_^\' /> ) I'm lookin at some socket 478's, cause I'm planning on just swappin my CPU. I wont try to sound to sound smart though, I dont know much about motherboards. So, my video card is a 128 PCI-E. But every socket 478 I look at says it has PCI slots, but no PCI-E x 16. I have no idea what the difference is between PCI-E and PCI-E x 16. Now, I'm thinkin about buying a PCI-E x 16 video card perhaps in a little bit, but I don't really need to, cause my current video card works just fine...But anyways, back to the point I was about to get at. I'm wondering if I should just buy a new motherboard and swap the processers(which I would spend about $130 on), or just put in the extra bucks, and buy a new CPU as well, which then I would probably buy an Athlon 64 or somethin. Is an Athlon 64 better than Pentium 4, or what? Not sure what to do, help please <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/help.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(help)\' />

I'm not sure about all that stuff, but i'm pretty sure that AMD computers are more stable, but slower.

I've always favoured AMD over Intel. My current comp is running an Athlon 3000+ and usually does a lot better than the Intel downstairs. PCI-E and PCI-E x16 are different in the speed they run at, PCI-E x16 being the faster one (double the speed of an AGP).

If you have the money (which I didn't, so had to pick the 3000+) I would suggest going with the Athlon 64 and getting a socket 939 motherboard. You're problem there might be that since 939 is more recent that 478, most motherboards will have PCI-E x16...so you'll need a new video card too.

If you really have the money, you could always look into the X2 or FX-60. All depends on you're budget.

While I'm here, the main difference between P4 and Athlon 64 is the Athlon's ability to run 64-bit software...which should be a hellova lot faster than the current 32-bit. MS are in the process of making a 64-bit version of Windows, and there is a 64-bit version of Mandrake out which you could use instead.

I've had computers with intel pentium brand, celeron brand, and AMD. The computers with AMD have had no problems at all, whereas the intel and celeron computers did not perform as well.

I find my new AMD (rated at only 1.8ghz) to be MUCH faster than my old Intel, (rated at 2.4ghz)

I have encountered problems no matter which CPU I'm running. The reason for my change from Intel to AMD is because the motherboard that my Intel was running on was SOMEHOW incompatible with my video card (NVidia 6600GT and the motherboard was SiS make) so I bought a new motherboard, without intel support. So I had to buy a new CPU too, which of course resulted in an AMD cpu.

money is not an issue when it comes to computers with me

Ok, I did a little lookin around. I would definitly have to do some saving up, but would you say [url=\"http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562\"]THIS[/url] would probably be a lot better than my current Pentium 4? It says its 2.0Ghz, but my computer says it currently has 3.2Ghz. I've been told that can be a little misleading though...Tell me what you think.

It's all to do with how many flops it can do.

If you do decide to buy the one you linked to, I'd strongly suggest replacing the heatsink and fan. Standard ones tend to be pretty poor at keeping the heat down.

Nice program vercz - 2132.8 MHz for me.

Problem with flops is that it isn't always given for comparison.

anywho, out of pure something... mine clocks in at 1283.4 Mhz... <- intel celeron, started life as a 1ghz... *smiles sweetly* anyone else OC'ed?
