Game of the week - Shadow of Rome

\"Holy s...! His arm\'s off!\"

This ain\'t exactly subtle. At regular intervals during the gladiatorial combat - which makes up one half of SOR\'s gameplay - men are rendered armless. Headless. Torsoless. Through a combination of forced combat and enough savagely forged steel to make a whole call center of Samaritans weep, the not-at-all-Russell-Crowe-like Agrippa spends most of his time awash in crimson carnage. And, shamefully, it\'s endlessly exhilarating.

In-between the unabashed violence you\'ll shrug on the toga of Octavianus, who favours a stealthier approach. In contrast to Agrippa\'s endeavours, these alternate levels flow at a completely different pace - stealing another man\'s keks is about the closest you\'ll come to eyebrow-raising abuse. We aren\'t talking Metal Gear Solid here - it\'s nowhere near as in-depth or complex as that - but there\'s a faintly humorous bent to the sneaking (placing banana skins, throwing apples at guards) that prevents it being just another stealth session. And there\'s no denying that the hacking and hewing feels so much more rewarding after half an hour of sticking to the shadows.

The plot - if you needed one - is simple, set around the time of Julius Caesar\'s assassination, but it never gets in the way of the brutal combat. Visually it\'s superb, although you\'ll hardly have time to notice. In the end, it\'s all about your next fight to the death, and though the stealth might get tiresome now and again, the squish of six-foot mace-on-bone will haul you back to the arena time after time - this is crunchy, bloody good fun.
