New DS trojan bricks your Nintendo DS

Post by king_of_hearts »

This past Monday (October 10) news of a Nintendo DS virus hit the airwaves. This trojan is apparently masquerading as a "hentai viewer" (for the uninitiated, hentai is a name for very naughty Japanese drawings). The malicious homebrew software ruins the firmware of the system, rendering it unusable. Two versions of this Trojan are now in the wild. Symantec has named the new trojan's Trojan.DSBrick.A and Trojan.DSBrick.B
It attacks the DS and essentially turns it into an expensive paperweight. Common users of the Nintendo DS have very little to fear, as the virus can only be acquired by downloading the malicious code. Advanced users of the Nintendo portable console should take caution when downloading any media.

I don't think it should be a problem at all since only an idiot would risk downloading something to their DS. If they call and complain to Nintendo, I hope they don't cover it at all becaus eit was the consumer's own stupidity.

It is impossible to compare two things that are so totally different. Only an idiot would download something that shouldn't be. It's just common sense. The e-mail thing is different because it would be like saying if you use AOL then you shouldn't open any e-mails except those from AOL. There is no common thing about them except they are electronic.

No they can easily be compared. Both try and suck you in to downloading/giving money or whatnot.

That may be. However, there is a completely different situation involved. It's like comparing a Car to a Slug. Besides that they move, they are completely different. The biggest difference of all is availability. How many people out there would honestly know how to download something like that to there DS and have the ability to? VERY FEW. How many people have internet access and an e-mail. MILLIONS! Need I say more?

You make a point about not alot of people knowing how to download the stuff to their DS, however it still cons you into downloading it, it may even provide you with instructions on how to do it, I don't know. But i do see where your coming from.

I don't see how anything cons you into downloading this DS virus thing. I never heard of such a thing as downloading anything to the DS besides the games from another DS. So I don't know how wide spread this thing is, but I doubt it is really that big of a concern. Good to know about, but still common sence not to risk messing with such an expensive item.

I've heard of the DS Brick B, it overwrites critical portions of memory on Nintendo DS portable devices, preventing the device from operating correctly.

Never heard of DS Brick A. Both very easily evaded. Whoever created the virus was an idiot, because not many on the net will be doing this type of thing.
