Hello Beta Testers!

We have just flipped the switch so you are now able to view films! Please note that film submission is by invitation only. When we fully launch, the entire community will be able to view films, but only those invited will be able to submit.

You'll notice that we offer normal quality and divX mode (theatre mode)

DivX video offers the most complete viewing experience for high resolution films (including HD) at full screen on the PC and beyond. Further, DivX videos can be downloaded to watch on any of the millions of DivX Certified devices out there—from DVD players to PMPs to in-car players and even mobile phones. It is because of this that we've chosen it as our preferred mode.

I urge you to check out divX (theatre mode) because it's truly exceptional.

Note the following that isn't currently available but will be when we full launch:

no volume in IE.
volume won't save in other browsers.
no fullscreen.
no comment hiding

Here is a screenshot of what an actual 'film' page looks like.

The 'divX Hi-Quality (Theatre Mode) will give you a high definition HD version of the movie right on the page if it is available. Basically the entire page fades to a dark green color and the video starts playing full screen in your browser. There is an option to view full screen with any video though (even if it isn't Hi-Def) and it freezes my browser up so that would be a very unlikable bug.

When you see a thumbnail of a dA film, the thumbnail scrolls through stills progressing through the film to give you a slight preview of the film before you watch it. Also, when a film is in someone's gallery it looks just like a regular 'deviation' but there is a small box that shows a time amount next to the thumbnail which indicates that it is a film and how long the film is.

I wonder how they plan to verify the ownership of all the submitted films, even if uploading is on an invite-only basis... the copyright demons are constantly plaguing sites like myspace, youtube, and google video for that very reason.

Josh, when you actually load the video... does it use an embedded object like Windows Media Player, or does it use a flv/swf player like youtube?

When you're on the page of the uploaded video file it uses a flash player.. When you switch to the Hi-Def version it uses a DivX web player

Well....pretty well everyone knew this was coming with the rather huge investment made by DivX into dA, and in reality, dA is, in my opinion, losing focus on the ART part of their name - that said, I have nfi how we are going to proceed.

A while back i heard something about if you submit work to DA they can use it for whatever they want... If that is true why would you upload short movies or whatnot to there?

Anyways, Yeah Tami, like most sites after a while they want to move on to bigger and better(money wise) things. The old DA was better in my opinion, now its just "hmm how can we squeeze more money out of our users"

Pretty much, yeah... They have lost the focus which is art. Now they're focused on the money... The old dA was a lot better imo, where people actually cared, there wasn't an infestation of anime <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... nsored.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(cens)\' /> art and there were people who actually gave you constructive crits on your art... lol.

As for them owning your art, they claim they had to put that in the policy because they have to use the art to generate thumbnails. But essentially, yes, they can do anything with the art that you upload, but you're not signing away your art to deviantART however. They just have the right to do whatever they want with it. Will they do anything other than generate thumbnails? I hope not.

WE cannot lose focus with what we want to do. quick case study:

Wal-mart target and K-mart - wal-mart is low price, Target is good stuff, K-Mart didn't know what to do ... and who they wanted to compete with changing up what they were doing - they went under. the REACTOR (K-Mart) is the dog (loser, bad product or business).

We do not react to other business, rather do what we want to do. We should NOT be like any other business rather revolutionize the business. You can't/will NOT make it by doing something that's done. It's either a new venture/idea/product, or you re-invent the wheel to revolutionize it.

We need to be revolutionary, and not reactive. We need to be on the brink of new ideas - coming up with the ideas that make these things new and inventive, not old, done before, and simply there.

I know, I know - we need to believe in ourselves and what we're capable of, and I know it's important to keep the focus, it's just hard to keep the spirits up when dA has so damned much money to play around with.....

takes money to make money, but it also takes brains. We got the brains they don't have when it comes to what the consumer wants. If they wanted to know what we know, they would have to conduct a survey, and run tests, analysis data and what not..... not us. We know what needs to be done, and what to do. We need some fresh brains to look at this and decide what would be REVOLUTIONARY in this area.

Don't get down with what they have .... think of what we have and make it happen with that...


With that said, I know I haven't been around much cause of school, but school has been giving me the knowledge that I just gave you, so I guess it's working in a sense lol
